Dr Ernest Wong joined Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust as a Consultant Rheumatologist in August 2009 having trained in the Rheumatology Centres of Excellence, Norwich, Bath and Oxford.
Dr Ernest Wong is passionate about delivering a high level of patient care and promoting patient safety. He specialises in the use of ultrasound in the diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis and safe ultrasound guided injections.
Within the first year of his consultant post, he set up the Early Inflammatory Arthritis Ultrasound service based at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. The following year, he started the combined Orthopaedic/Rheumatology Foot clinic.
Dr. Ernest Wong is also a Patient Safety Fellow for the South of England Strategic Health Authority. He has successfully piloted the Immunosuppressant Monitoring Patient Safety Project within the Rheumatology department at QAH. The piloted results were presented at the National Patient Safety Conference in November 2011, with Professor Sir Bruce Keogh as keynote speaker. The best practice was also shared internationally at the Institute of Healthcare Improvement conference in Orlando during December 2011.
As a strong advocate for the use of ultrasound in Rheumatology, he tutors at the Wessex Rheumatology Ultrasound special interest group quarterly meetings and is a visiting ultrasound tutor nationally. He has chaired and hosted both regional and national Advanced Ultrasound in Inflammatory Arthritis Clinical Perceptorships with invited international Rheumatology sonography experts including Professor Walter Grassi and Dr Emilio Filippucci.
As a fellow of the National Leadership Council, he was invited to Westminster as part of the “Listening Exercise” to advise Secretary of Heath, Rt. Hon. Andrew Lansley, in May 2011.
In November 2011, Dr. Ernest Wong led his team to receive the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society Healthcare Champion Award presented by the Home Secretary, Rt. Hon. Theresa May in the Speakers Chambers, House of Commons, Westminster.
