There are a number of common conditions that our consultants and physiotherapist see on a regular basis. Treatments for these can vary and may be decided on a number of factors with the patient, including having problems using the hand in everyday life, lack of mobility in the affected joint or severe pain.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is amongst the most common conditions that our Consultants come across. This condition occurs when pressure on one of the main nerves to the hand causes pins and needles or, in more severe cases, numbness and weakness to the hand. Treatment in less severe cases can be an injection, however where injections do not work, or symptoms are more severe surgery is an option. Find out more about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome here.
Dupuytren's Contracture can take months or years to develop. It often starts with a lump or band in the palm of the hand which over time can extend to one or more fingers stopping them from straightening. Often Dupuytren's is caused by genetics, however it can also be caused by smoking or injuries such as broken wrist. Dupuytren's can be treated by injection or, in more severe cases, by surgery. Find out more about Dupuytren's Contracture here.
Other common conditions that our consultants and physiotherapists treat include:
- Arthritis of the thumb
- Arthritis of the wrist
- Ganglion cyst
- Trigger finger
We also have a specialist hand physiotherapist, Carla, who is a member of the British Association of Hand Therapists. Her particular interest is in hand rehabilitation.
