Mr Dae Kim, pioneers key-hole thyroid surgery in Portsmouth

July 2012

One of Spire Portsmouth Hospital's ENT Consultants, Mr Dae Kim, is pioneering a new technology to perform surgery on the thyroid without leaving scars.

This new surgery, known as the Transaxillary "scarless" Robotic and Endoscopic Thyroidectomy, will allow patients to have lumps in their throats removed with minimal to no scarring. This new technique will allow Mr Kim to access the throat through keyhole surgery either in the throat itself, leaving a small but barely visible scar, or via the armpit.

The Da Vinci robot, as it is known, is already being used within the Portsmouth NHS Trust at Queen Alexandra Hospital. It is expected to bring in patients from further a field to receive treatment from Mr Kim, one of only two consultants in the UK trained in using it.
