For many people coming into hospital is a daunting prospect. At Spire Portsmouth Hospital we want to ensure that we answer any questions from the patients and their families to allay their fears so that their stay with us is as comfortable as possible.

The information we give patients prior to admission is specific to each operation, treatment or investigation. There will also be instructions on preparing for the stay and what to bring on the day of admission.

Generally we ask that patients do not drink alcohol the day before admission and if they are a smoker, to stop smoking or cut down as much as possible, if having a general anaesthetic.

Items to bring on the day of admission:

All medication (in its original packaging) that you are taking
Dressing gown
Slippers (closed toe)
Books and/or magazines
Toiletries
Toothbrush and toothpaste or denture cleaner
Shaving kit
Small travel clock
