New cardiac services - hypertension and breathlessness clinics

Hypertension and rapid assessment for breathlessness services

We are delighted to announce the launch of two new cardiac services at Spire Portsmouth Hospital.  Led by Consultant Cardiologists Dr Paul Kalra and Dr Huw Griffiths, the services provide full assessment and management of these conditions.

Hypertension service

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition and the higher the blood pressure the greater the chances are of a heart attack, stroke or kidney disease.  Many patients with hypertension are undiagnosed.

We offer a quick and easy access to a diagnostic service for the investigation and assessment of patients with suspected, newly diagnosed or difficult to treat hypertension.  The service provides a comprehensive set of investigations these include:

  • ECG
  • detailed assessment of heart function with an echo-ultrasound scan of the heart
  • urine test to assess kidney dysfunction
  • 24 hour blood pressure assessment

Rapid breathlessness clinic

Breathlessness can have a number of causes such as heart and lung problems that can be hard to differentiate without a wide-ranging series of tests.  Of these heart failure is a particularly important condition to diagnose early and appropriately.  The Rapid Breathlessness Clinic at Spire Portsmouth Hospital provides a comprehensive set of tests, diagnosis and formulation of a management plan.  The test will include:

  • specific blood tests
  • ECG
  • assessment of heart function (echo - ultrasound scan of the heart)
  • lung function tests

Both these services do require a GP referral.
