A new study has demonstrated why increased exercise may not be enough on its own to ensure a person loses weight.
The City University of New York study has highlighted the way in which the human body adapts to higher activity levels, meaning people do not necessarily burn additional calories even if they exercise more.
Daily energy expenditure and activity levels were measured in more than 300 men and women over the course of a week, revealing a weak but measurable effect of physical activity on daily energy expenditure.
However, this pattern was only notable among subjects on the lower half of the physical activity spectrum. Those with moderate activity levels had somewhat higher daily energy expenditures, but further increases in activity had no effect in terms of energy expenditure.
Although the researchers acknowledged that exercise is essential for good health, the study indicates that this alone is not sufficient to guarantee a better physique.
Lead author Herman Pontzer at the City University of New York said: "What our work adds is that we also need to focus on diet, particularly when it comes to managing our weight and preventing or reversing unhealthy weight gain."
