New health research has revealed a link between obesity and excessive coffee consumption, defined as five or more cups a day. Whether the coffee is caffeinated or not makes no difference. Too much coffee of any kind could prevent weight loss and increase water retention.
Additionally, five cups could be enough to increase your risk for type two diabetes. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Western Australia, indicates that the a chemical in the drink called chlorogenic acid (CGA) could cause insulin resistance. Furthermore, it may prevent fat loss - a risk factor for type two diabetes.
In moderation, coffee has been found to aid weight loss efforts and actually reduce risk for diabetes.
Co-author of the study, professor Kevin Croft, said: “The CGAs [in coffee] were previously known for their health benefits, increasing insulin sensitivity and reducing blood pressure and body fat accumulation.”
“However, this study proved the opposite in dosages equivalent to five or six cups of coffee per day,” added co-author Vance Matthews.
To assess your risk for type two diabetes, tests are available which will measure your blood sugar levels and determine whether it falls within a healthy range.
