When it comes to the battle of the bulge, many people re-evaluate the kinds of food and drink they are consuming. However, there may be more to successfully losing weight than just changing your diet, a new study has suggested.
Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BHW) in Boston, USA, and the University of Murcia, Spain, have discovered that what time food and drink is consumed also plays an important part in the way a person's metabolism works.
Those who eat earlier in the day are more likely to lose weight than those who tuck into food late at night. An early lunch, for example is classed as 3pm, a late lunch is considered to be after this time.
"This is the first large-scale prospective study to demonstrate that the timing of meals predicts weight-loss effectiveness," said Frank Scheer, director of the Medical Chronobiology Program and associate neuroscientist at BWH and senior author on this study.
"Our results indicate that late eaters displayed a slower weight-loss rate and lost significantly less weight than early eaters, suggesting that the timing of large meals could be an important factor in a weight loss program."
