Women can potentially bolster their bone health at key points during their lifetimes with supplements of soluble corn fibre.
This is according to new research from Purdue University, which indicated that upping the intake of soluble corn fibre at two key points in a woman's life - during adolescence and at menopause - can help build and retain calcium in bone.
In the postmenopausal study, 14 women were assessed, with bone calcium retention shown to be improved by 4.8 per cent and seven per cent for those who consumed ten grams and 20 grams respectively.
Meanwhile, the adolescent study assessed 31 girls, with both the ten and 20 gram doses leading to improved calcium absorption by 12 per cent, which would build 1.8 per cent more bone per year.
Connie Weaver, distinguished professor and head of nutrition science at Purdue University, said: "We are looking deeper in the gut to build healthy bone in girls and help older women retain strong bones during an age when they are susceptible to fractures."
