A new study has indicated that a high-fat diet can have a positive effect on cartilage repair among animal test subjects.
Led by the Erasmus MC University Medical Centre, the research aimed to examine the impact of body weight on cartilage repair processes. It is well-known that obesity is a risk factor for osteoarthritis, but its effects on cartilage repair were previously unknown.
It was shown that a high-fat diet and increased body weight did not negatively impair cartilage repair, and in fact showed signs of actually accelerating the process. The effect of the high-fat diet on cartilage repair was theorised to be most likely related to inflammatory and metabolic changes, but the exact underlying mechanism remains unclear.
Senior author Dr Gerjo van Osch of the Erasmus MC University Medical Centre said: "It also remains to be elucidated whether this phenomenon is particular for the mouse strain used in this study or is a more general phenomenon that also occurs in other genetic strains."
Osteoarthritis usually develops in people over 45 years of age, although younger people can also be affected. It is a chronic condition that currently cannot be cured.
