Cases of AMD 'set to increase rapidly in next decade'

15 February 2012

More people could be seeking corrective eye surgery over the next few years, following the findings of a new study.

According to research conducted by a team of scientists at St George's, University of London, the number of progressive blindness cases is set to jump by a third over the next decade.

Currently, half of registered blind people suffer from age-related macular degeneration (AMD), but the researchers believe this figure will rise to 679,000 cases come 2020.

The scientists claim that this is largely because of an ageing population, with around one in 2,000 individuals having AMD by the time they reach 60 years old, and one in five suffering from the condition when aged 90.

Helen Jackman, chief executive of the Macular Disease Society, commented: "Macular degeneration is a devastating condition for many people and an urgent issue for society as a whole."

When it comes to seeking corrective eye surgery, Dr Anthony Komaroff, a physician and professor at Harvard Medical School, recently noted that Lasik eye surgery commonly sees patients noticing "dramatic improvements in vision almost immediately".
