Women with type 1 diabetes at higher risk of dying

9 February 2015

A new study has found that women with type 1 diabetes are at a 37 per cent higher risk of dying from all causes. The large meta-analysis also found that females are more than twice as likely to die from heart disease, compared to men with type 1 diabetes.

Published in the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, the study examined the data of more than 200,000 people with the condition.

Although it's well understood that people with type 1 diabetes have shorter life expectancies, it was unclear whether this risk altered between men and women, according to lead author Rachel Huxley.

Dr Huxley, who is also a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Queensland in Australia, said that, although women generally live longer than men, in cases of type 1 diabetes this "female protection" seems to be lost.

Along with her team, she conducted a meta-analysis of all studies examining sex-specific estimates of mortality for men and women associated with type 1 diabetes over the last five decades.

It also found that women with the condition had a 37 per cent higher risk of having a stroke, and are 44 per cent more likely to die from kidney disease than men with the disorder.
