New laser device could provide blood sugar solution

Researchers at Princeton University have created a new laser device that is able to measure blood sugar to a high level of accuracy. The tool uses a quantum cascade laser to monitor levels and could mean that diabetics are able to check their levels without having to draw blood.

Published in the journal Biomedical Optics Express, the report explains how the device works by being directed over the patient's palm. It then passes through the skin without causing any damage and the laser is partially absorbed by the sugar molecules. 

The researchers can then use the level of absorption to judge how much blood sugar is in the patient's blood.

Sabbir Liakat, the paper's lead author and a a graduate student in electrical engineering, said the team had been surprised with how successful the method had been. Glucose monitors must be within 20 per cent of the patient's actual blood sugar level. The new device was found to meet the standard, even from early tests, but the latest version is 84 per cent accurate.
