People who developed a milk drinking habit as youngsters could experience physical benefits in later life, it has been revealed.
A new study published in the journal Age & Aging found that drinking one extra glass of milk a day as a child was linked to a five per cent faster walking time and 25 per cent lesser chance of poor balance as people got older.
Researchers said there was a "public health benefit of childhood milk intake on physical function in old age".
It was also found that people who drink milk as children were more likely to become adult milk drinkers, which underlines the importance of establishing healthy habits for life while young.
The study used historical diet records from two large studies to assess the childhood habits of over 1,500 men between the ages of 62 and 86.
They looked at the impact of diet on current performance and mobility by assessing their abilities in a series of activities, which included walking, get-up-and-go and balance tests.
