Teenagers are putting their health at risk by not getting enough fruit and vegetables, according to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey.
The poll found that just one in 13 girls between the ages of 11 and 18 eat the recommended five portions of fruit and veg each day, while just one in eight of their male counterparts eat the correct amount.
On average, girls eat 2.7 portions of fruit and veg a day, while boys eat 3.1.
Chief medical officer Professor Dame Sally Davies commented that the figures are very concerning and young people's diets could have implications for their health in later life, and could lead to them suffering from heart problems or requiring cancer treatment.
"It is really important that teenagers eat a balanced diet – including eating five portions of fruit and veg a day. Eating well and being active can help prevent serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease later in life," she added.
The World Health Organization recommends people eat a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables a day.
