Giving birth later 'lowers womb cancer risk'

27 July 2012

Women who give birth to their final child later in their life have a lower risk of developing womb cancer, according to a new study.

Research carried out by experts from the University of Southern California found that the risk of developing the condition begins to decrease after age 30 by around 13 per cent for each five-year delay in giving birth to a final child.

This means that those who have their last baby when they are 40 or older have a 44 per cent lower risk of developing the condition than women who have all of their children by the age of 25.

According to the lead author of the study Dr Veronica Setiawan, the research – which analysed 8,671 cases - shows that being a late age at last birth is a "significant protective factor after taking into account other factors known to influence the disease, such as body weight, number of children and oral contraceptive use.

"This study shows an important protective factor for endometrial cancer, and when the exact mechanism by which it protects women from getting the disease is known, it can help our understanding of how endometrial cancer develops and thus how to prevent it," she added.
