Excess blood pressure lowering 'can be harmful for heart disease patients'

31 August 2016

Heart disease patients being treated with blood pressure lowering therapies have been warned of the potential negative impact of these treatments being overused.

Analysis of data from the CLARIFY registry, which encompassed information on more than 22,000 patients with coronary artery disease, found that excessively low blood pressure was associated with worse health outcomes.

Current European Society of Cardiology guidelines recommend lowering blood pressure to values within the range of 130 to 139 and 80 to 85 mmHg for patients with coronary artery disease to reduce the risk of further cardiovascular events.

In this study, a systolic blood pressure of 140 mmHg or more after a median follow-up of five years was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events, as was a diastolic blood pressure of 80 mmHg or less.

Professor Philippe Gabriel Steg, principal investigator of the CLARIFY registry, said: "Some argue the lower, the better, but there is a concern that patients with coronary artery disease may have insufficient blood flow to the heart if their blood pressure is too low."
