New cholesterol guidelines could help reduce heart attacks

19 August 2014

A new study from the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern has found that new cholesterol guidelines can help significantly reduce the cardiovascular problems, when compared to treatment based on previous cholesterol recommendations.

The research selected Dallas Heart Study participants in the 30 to 65 age range who would have qualified for statin use under the new cholesterol guidelines, which were introduced in 2013 by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA).

The team predicted that between 3.6 to 4.9 cardiovascular events could have been prevented for every 1,000 people screened if the new guidelines were favoured over the old recommendations. Extending this to the larger Dallas County population, it could mean that around 4,500 serious heart problems would have been prevented over a ten-year period.

Dr Amit Khera, associate professor of Internal Medicine and director of the Preventive Cardiology Program at UT Southwestern, said it is one of the first studies to predict the implications of the new guidelines in the general population.

There had been concern that the increased use of statins would cause a problem, however, the new study shows support for the updated guidelines.
