While many believe that overweight people need to eat little and often, eating fewer, larger meals could actually prove healthier for obese women.
Research from the University of Missouri found that eating three substantial meals a day, instead of six small meals, lowered the amount of fat in women's blood.
It could, therefore, decrease women's risk of developing heart disease over time.
Lead author Tim Heden commented: “Our data suggests that, for obese women, eating fewer, bigger meals may be more advantageous metabolically compared to eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day."
He added that while many believe that eating several small meals throughout the day is the best option for a healthy metabolism, there was not much scientific literature that backed up this claim.
Co-author Jill Kanaley explained: “With multiple meals throughout the day, you have to be careful. If you start consuming several meals, there’s more potential to overeat or to make unhealthy snack choices with easily accessible junk food."
