Vitamin D deficiency 'heightens the risk of heart disease'

28 September 2012

New health research has warned that a deficiency of Vitamin D in the body increases the risk of someone suffering from heart disease.

A study carried out at the University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen University Hospital identifies that there is a clear link between a low level of Vitamin D and the increased likelihood of a person having a heart attack and encountering early death.

Dr Peter Brondum-Jacobsen, from the clinical biochemical department of the Copenhagen University Hospital, highlighted in more detail: "We observed that low levels of vitamin D compared to optimal levels are linked to 40 per cent higher risk of ischemic heart disease, 64 per cent higher risk of heart attack, 57 per cent higher risk of early death, and to no less than 81 per cent higher risk of death from heart disease."

Scientists behind the study will now delve further into the connection between Vitamin D deficiency and the risk of heart disease, to determine whether it is an indisputable causal relationship.

The research comes soon after a joint study by Flora pro.activ and the British Heart Foundation found that 84 per cent of British women do not talk about heart disease, despite it being the UK's number one killer.
