Eating chips could raise prostate cancer risk by a third

20 February 2013

Eating chips just once a week could raise men's prostate cancer risk by a third, scientists say.

Just a single portion of deep-fried food like chips, fried chicken and doughnuts may heighten the danger of prostate cancer diagnosis by 30 to 37 per cent, the research showed.

Moreover, the types of tumour linked with consumption of deep-fried snacks tend to be more aggressive, the research published in the journal The Prostate suggests.

Previous studies have linked poor diet to a man's chance of developing prostate cancer, but this is the first to indicate deep-fried foods pose a danger.

A team at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in the US speculated that deep-frying may trigger the formation of carcinogens – which cause cancer – in food, with the development of such toxic compounds increased with re-use of oil and longer frying times.

"This is the first study to look at the association between intake of deep-fried foods and risk of prostate cancer," said Dr Janet Stanford, who led the research.

"The link appeared to be limited to the highest level of consumption - defined in our study as more than once a week. This suggests that regular consumption of deep-fried foods confers a particular risk for developing prostate cancer."

Almost 40,000 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed every year in the UK.
