Magnetic pulses 'can self-destruct tumours'

Tumours found inside cancers could be "self-destructed" with the assistance of a powerful magnetic pulse, scientists claim.

Researchers from the Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, are confident that a process which involves tiny iron nanoparticles attached to antibodies binding to receptor molecules on tumour cells could help battle against the life-threatening diseases.

Once a magnetic field is switched on, the molecules cluster together and cause a "death signal" to be signalled, the scientists pointed out.

To highlight their claims, the researchers carried out a laboratory test that saw more than half of bowel cancer cells being destroyed when exposed to the nanoparticles and magnetic pulse process.

Henry Scowcroft, from Cancer Research UK, commented: "Research like this shows how ingenious scientists are in the quest to beat cancer."

Though cancer mortality rates in Europe have declined over the past few decades, around 170 people per 100,000 died from the disease in 2010 alone, according to Cancer Research UK.
