Eating fish and nuts 'cuts pancreatic cancer risk'

People can help to reduce their risk of developing pancreatic cancer by following a diet that contains plenty of fish and nuts, the latest research has suggested.

A study by researchers from the University of East Anglia shows that people who consume large quantities of vitamins C and E and the mineral Selenium were 67 per cent less likely to develop the disease.

The report was published in the Gut journal and used data from almost 24,000 men and women aged 40 to 74, analysing their weekly food intake.

Those in the upper quartile when it came to selenium consumption had half the risk of pancreatic cancer, while those in the top 25 per cent for consumption of vitamins C, E and selenium together were two-thirds less likely.

"If a causal association is confirmed by reporting consistent findings from other epidemiological studies, then population based dietary recommendations may help to prevent pancreatic cancer," the authors added.
