Testing for cervical cancer 'hits ten-year low'

11 June 2012

New research has revealed that testing for cervical cancer among women has dropped to its lowest level in ten years across England this week.

According to Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, 20 per cent of females across the country are opting not to get checked for the life-threatening disease.

This is in spite of cervical screening being responsible for saving the lives of around 5,000 people across the UK on an annual basis.

When looking into why women are ignoring being tested for cervical cancer, the trust believes many think the screening is not necessary or relevant to them.

On top of this, some females are unaware of the causes and many others fail to pick up on the common symptoms associated with cervical cancer.

However, Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust director Robert Music stated: "Every day, eight women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and three lives are lost to the disease. Cervical screening can help reduce these numbers. "

Last week, Caroline Crawford, who was diagnosed with terminal cervical cancer in 2011, urged Daily Record readers to never put off being tested for the serious disease.
