Do not take the chance where cervical cancer is concerned

7 June 2012

Women across the UK are being encouraged to not put off being tested for signs of cervical cancer by a survivor of the life-threatening disease.

The Daily Record reports that the number of women who are taking precautionary action to catch the condition before it develops has tumbled in recent years.

In fact, the publication found that 27 per cent of females living in Scotland have admitted that they do not undergo regular smears.

Caroline Crawford, of Inverness, knows what it is like to be diagnosed with cervical cancer, after being told she had a terminal form of the disease last year.

Her story with the illness is set to be highlighted tonight (June 7th) in a Sky Living documentary, Jade's Legacy, The Fight Goes On.

Ms Crawford told the Daily Record: "If other women read this or watch the programme and think, there's something wrong here, I'm going to my GP to get this checked out, then it's worth doing it."

Jade's Legacy, The Fight Goes On is named after reality TV star Jade Goody, who lost her long battle against cervical cancer back in March 2009.

The story gripped the hearts of the nation, with the number of women between the age of 25 and 29 years old in the UK undergoing smear tests increasing by a third in the 12 months following Jade's death.
