Parents across the UK are known to urge their children to eat their vegetables, but new research has suggested that this diet may help to thwart the effects of cancer in later life.
According to an expansive study which was conducted by Chinese researchers, women who eat their greens are more likely to survive their battle against breast cancer.
The research suggested that there is a link between those who consume a high level of cruciferous vegetables and a reduction in breast cancer mortality rates.
Around 5,000 women were studied over a five-year period after they were diagnosed with the deadly disease, with those who regularly ate their greens during the first three years increasing their chances of survival.
Furthermore, the recurrence of the condition following successful cancer treatment decreased by between 21 per cent and 35 per cent in those who ate cruciferous vegetables.
Recent research by Virginia Commonwealth University also suggested that people who managed to battle cancer were more likely to die in the years following from other illnesses, and not a recurrence of the disease.
