Physical activity reduces risk of cancer resurgence

9 August 2011

Chances of cancer recurrence, heart disease, osteoporosis, depression, fatigue and other problems associated with cancer treatment can all be significantly reduced through daily physical exercise, according to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Research published yesterday (August 8th) by the charity found that although patients find the recovery stage following intensive chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment difficult, daily activity has significant immediate and long-term benefits.

Macmillan's study, Move More, revealed breast cancer patients reduced their risk of recurrence or mortality by up to 40 per cent while bowel and prostate cancer sufferers decreased their chances by up to 50 and 30 per cent respectively.

The results demonstrated "just how important physical activity is to the recovery process", according to Macmillan's chief executive Ciaran Devane.

"It doesn't need to be anything too strenuous, doing the gardening, going for a brisk walk or a swim all count," he added.

As part of the health initiative, the charity has teamed up with former psychiatric nurse and award-winning comedian Jo Brand to help publicise the campaign in a video by renowned director and actor Peter Capaldi.

Brand said the work was important to overturn the "myth" that sustained periods of rest and inactivity were conducive to healthy cancer recovery.
