I have been a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon for nine years and I am an expert in chest wall surgery for pectus and lung volume reduction therapies for COPD. I am also an academic at the University of Birmingham.

I specialise in general thoracic surgery with specific interests in:

  • Pectus surgery both Nuss and Ravitch
  • Lung volume reduction therapy for COPD/emphysema including surgery key hole or minimally invasive surgery, endobronchial therapies such as valves and coils
  • Cancer affecting the lung - minimally invasive curative surgery and endobronchial diagnosis and therapies

To date, I have performed over 1,500 surgeries for cancer affecting the lung, 200 pectus operations and over 100 procedures for lung volume reduction, in both my NHS and private practice.

I lead and manage a research team consisting of 10 (research nurses, doctors, data managers, biomedical scientist) based at the University Hospital Birmingham. The team recruited 1,275 patients into clinical studies in 2016/7 accounting for almost 20% of overall recruitment of patients into clinical portfolio studies in the hospital. Our team was awarded a prize for the one with the most impact at the West Midlands Clinical Research network meeting 2016.

In addition to my clinical work, I am also proud to be a senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham. I have published over 80 articles in peer reviewed medical journals and contributed to multiple medical textbooks. My clinical research interests include; enhanced recovery/rehabilitation for surgery, mechanism, detection and therapy of post operative acute lung injury, chest wall motion analysis novel technology and clinical uses, bio markers in lung (primary and metastatic) cancer and novel surgical treatment for Emphysema.

I was co-editor for the international guidelines of enhanced recovery after lung surgery which defines best practice on every aspect of care before, during and after surgery. This ensures that patients get the best possible outcome after their surgery.
