Most of my surgical training has been in the Midlands, with the Coventry group of hospitals and at Birmingham. My urological higher surgical training started in Birmingham and continued in London including the Institute of Urology. My subsequent Senior Registrar appointment took me to Sharjah, United Arab Emirates with the Allied Medical Group, London and subsequently as Consultant Urological Surgeon to Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. returning back to the UK in 1991. The experience has been invaluable. I found the ability to speak in Arabic to my patients in U.A.E very fulfilling and rewarding.
My practice at Spire Parkway Hospital stems from providing a quality service that I feel very proud of. My two major urological interests are uro-oncology for bladder/ prostate cancer and urinary stone disease. Back in October 2004 I visited Prof Urs Studer’s unit in Berne, Switzerland who is a world leader in neo-bladder reconstruction. Since February 2005, I have introduced this to Heart of England NHS Foundation trust and to date carried out 17 such procedures following radical cystectomy who are suitable but does not wish to have an urinary stoma.
Since October 2009, I have modified the anastomosis after radical prostatectomy by using a continuous suture on every consecutive radical prostatectomy. This has indeed reduced the length of stay in the vast majority to 2 days and also improved their continence rate. I am the first Urological Surgeon at HEFT who has submitted the outcome data for the year April 2011 – March 2012 on 51 radical prostatectomy patients with at least 12 month follow up. This should be available on the trust’s website very soon.
I have been providing lithotripsy for stones as well as Peyronie's disease here at Spire Parkway Hospital. Vasectomy reversal using magnifying loops is my preferred option.
I have run a prostate assessment clinic locally for 15 years and interest at Green Light KTP laser prostatectomy was only natural. I have carried out the largest number of Green Light laser prostatectomies at HEFT and also provide this at Spire parkway. This has now become a Day Surgical procedure with trial without catheter the following morning. I am committed to developing a one-stop prostate assessment service as well as a rapid access haematuria service at Spire parkway hospital.
