Mr Alan Doherty is the founder of the Birmingham Prostate Clinic and has had extensive exposure to radical prostatectomy for early prostate cancer. Mr Doherty was taught by Timothy Christmas (Charing Cross Hospital), Urs Studer (Berne, Switzerland), Roger Kirby, Christopher Woodhouse (Royal Marsden Hospital) Neil O'Donoghue (Institute of Urology).
Mr Doherty has had recent publications on prostate cancer and PSA in the Lancet and British Journal of Cancer (BJC 2000 Dec; 83(11):1432-6, Lancet 354 (9195): 2053-2054, 1999).
Mr Doherty is currently working at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham with sub-specialist interest in uro-oncology. His main clinical interest is finding ways of making clinical outcomes accurate and transparent.
Mr Doherty is unique in the country is having a large experience in open, laparoscopic and robotic prostate surgery. He has performed close to 2,500 cases and his live results can be seen on the Birmingham Prostate Clinic Website.
He has also a great interest in the use of the XPS Green Light Laser.
For selected cases he offers High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU).
Mr Doherty is one of the few surgeons in England with experience in orthotopic bladder substitution.
He also has experience in renal cancer performing thoracoabdominal surgery for very large renal tumours.
