Tony rocks up to present Macmillan Quality Award

Guitar hero Tony Iommi made a special appearance at a Solihull hospital just days before jetting off to the States for a six-week sell-out tour with Black Sabbath.

Tony was at Spire Parkway Hospital’s Cancer Centre to present a prestigious Macmillan Quality Environment Mark.

Tony, who was a regular visitor to the Parkway Hospital for over two years as he was successfully treated for lymphoma, said he was delighted to be back on such a happy occasion.

“I received tremendous treatment when I was here and it is no real surprise to me that the new centre has received this award so soon after opening.

“This is a great boost to cancer services in this area. I know first-hand how talented and caring the people here are and I am sure having this fantastic new building is going to make things even better for patients,” he said.

The Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM) is awarded after a rigorous assessment of the centre to ensure cancer care environments meet the standards required by people living with cancer. It is the first assessment tool of its kind in the UK.

In meeting the MQEM standards the centre is demonstrating it is:

welcoming and accessible to all;

respectful of people's privacy and dignity;

supportive to users' comfort and well-being;

giving choice and control to people using your service;

listening to the voice of the user.

Spire Parkway Cancer Services Manager Elisa Follen said: “It was a real honour to be awarded the MQEM and for Tony to come and hand it over was the icing on the cake. He is very well liked by everyone here who met him during his treatment and is a great friend of the hospital.

“We have a fantastic team with in-depth specialist knowledge along with some experienced and very well respected consultants.

“The cancer journey is a tough and emotional one for everyone involved – including family and friends -  but I think we have what we need to  make that journey as comfortable and successful as possible.”
