Fond farewell to local consultant

Members of Spire Parkway Private Hospital bided Professor Don Milligan, Consultant Haematologist, a fond farewell as he retires from 30 years’ service.

Professor Milligan has spent most of his working life in the Heart of England NHS trust and over 25 years at Spire Parkway helping those with life changing illnesses.

He described his work as “extremely rewarding, being able to support those living with haematological cancers is something I will miss, knowing you have made a positive difference to someone’s life is what it’s all about.”

Over the years Professor Milligan has treated hundreds of patients and worked tirelessly to improve patient outcomes. His specialities included stem cell transplantation, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and acute myeloid leukaemia. Most recently past patient, Tony Iommi, from heavy metal band Black Sabbath, announced he was in remission following treatment for lymphoma under the care of Professor Milligan.

He said: “My work has always been challenging, but enjoyable. I was Medical Director for the Pan Birmingham Cancer Network and director of the Healthcare Research Institute at Heartlands Hospital. It’s been fantastic to see the development of haematological research and its outcomes to provide patients with the best care and treatment available.”

Following on in Professor Milligan’s footsteps, are three eminent haematologists whom he has known for years, “I am delighted to leave the care of my patients and all those who come through the doors at Spire Parkway to my colleagues, Dr Paneesha, Dr Nikolousis and Dr Kishore. I know they have the knowledge, expertise and compassionate care to carry on the high levels of care they already provide to their patients and will now do so to those who were under my care.”

Alongside the big changes in research and treatments Professor Milligan has seen across the NHS, he is pleased to have seen the completion of Spire Parkway’s new Specialist Cancer Centre and been able to use the centre during his final months.

“The new cancer facilities at Parkway are second to none and I feel delighted we are able to provide the local community with such excellent care and access to first class treatment facilities.”

Stepping away from the medical profession will now leave Professor Milligan plenty of time for golf, gardening and grandchildren!

Cancer Services Manager Elisa Follen said “It’s been a delight to have Professor Milligan working with the team at Spire Parkway for over 25 years. We wish him all the best for a happy and healthy retirement, but he is always welcome to come and visit us.”
