Don't miss your checks - they could save your life

Just days after being diagnosed with breast cancer, Susan Jervis was out walking and got chatting to a woman she had never met before.

“It was a remarkable coincidence but as we got talking she said she was being called up for her first ever breast screening and she was very worried about it. She said she was so anxious that they might find something wrong that she was thinking of not going,” explained Susan.

“I told her my own story and said that putting off screening would just mean delaying treatment if something was wrong and I stressed that early diagnosis meant earlier treatment and better results.

“I’m delighted to say that when I bumped into her a few weeks later she told me she’d had the scan and the results were all clear,” said 66-year-old mum-of-three Susan.

Susan's cancer was detected by a routine scan at the South Staffs Hospital and Susan, who lives with husband Richard in Wolverhampton, was referred to Consultant Breast Surgeon Mr Senthurun Mylvaganam.

Now undergoing treatment at the Specialist Care Centre at Spire Parkway Hospital, Solihull, Susan is continuing to encourage women to make sure they don’t miss their screening session and to self-check their breasts on a regular basis.

“It is so important for women to get to know their breasts and be aware of any changes to them. The national breast screening programme starts when you reach 50 but women should be making their own checks long before then,” she said.
