Surgery to change the shape of the nose is performed either because the nose doesn't work properly or, because the nose doesn't look right and sometimes for both reasons. Both plastic and ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons at Spire Norwich Hospital offer surgery to correct or repair the noses for Norfolk patients.

What is a nosejob or rhinoplasty surgery?
If you are not happy with the size or shape of your nose, rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job”, can change it. You may feel your nose is too big, too small, too narrow or too wide or perhaps it is crooked, has a bulbous end, or a bump in it. Whatever you are unhappy with, nose reshaping from Spire Cosmetic Surgery may help you achieve the look you want.
About nose reshaping surgery
There are two main types of rhinoplasty – reduction rhinoplasty to make the nose smaller, and augmentation rhinoplasty to give the nose more bulk or make it larger.
Cartilage and bone is removed or rearranged through cuts inside your nostrils. The skin on the outside of your nose is left untouched and shrinks down to the new shape. To keep your features in proportion, it might also be necessary to make your nostrils smaller through small cuts in the skin. This will leave fine scars on each nostril.
The bone is reshaped through cuts inside or between your nostrils. Sometimes extra bone or cartilage is needed to build up the nose. A bone graft may be taken from your hip, a rib, the back of your elbow or the surface of your skull. Cartilage may be taken from your ears or from spare cartilage inside your nose. Sometimes artificial implants are used. The skin on the outside of your nose often doesn’t need to be cut, as it stretches over the new shape.
Both operations last between 60 and 90 minutes and are usually carried out under general anaesthetic, so you will be asleep throughout the procedure. You will usually be able to return home the same day, though if you have had a bone graft, you may need to stay in hospital for one or two nights.
There may be some pain after rhinoplasty, though painkillers will help. There will be bruising and swelling, particularly around your eyes, which can take about three weeks to settle. It will take around three months for the swelling in your nose to disappear.
If you have had augmentation rhinoplasty, your nose will feel numb and stiff. The numbness usually disappears within a couple of months, but the stiffness is likely to be permanent and your nose may feel unnaturally hard. Your nose may look also look slightly bigger than you expected. This is deliberate because bone grafts gradually shrink in size during the first year or two. If the bone graft was taken from another part of your body, you will feel some pain initially and be left with a scar at the place it was taken from.
