Background Information
Professional profile:

A graduate of Leicester University Medical School, Mr Philpott completed his basic surgical training in the University Hospital of Leicester before undertaken a period of research into developing apparatus for testing the sense of smell. His specialist training was completed in East Anglia, during which time he spent a year at the St Paul's Sinus Centre in Vancouver, Canada learning advanced skills in endoscopic sinus surgery for inflammatory diseases of the nose and sinuses as well as tumours of the sinuses and anterior skull base. Mr Philpott also spent time at the Dresden University Smell and Taste Clinic learning techniques for assessing and researching the sense of smell. His main clinical interests include the medical and surgical treatment of chronic rhinosinusitits, allergic fungal rhinosinusitits and other sino-nasal disorders, as well as addressing post-traumatic problems with the nose.

Mr Philpott is the course organiser for the East Anglian Sinus Surgery and Skull Base Course and is an invited instructor and speaker at other sinus surgery courses and meetings. He has also undertaken humanitarian work in Kampala, Uganda training African surgeons how to use minimal access surgery to treat nose and sinus diseases.

Mr Philpott has established advanced sinus surgery at the James Paget Hospital, replacing old techniques such as nasal polypectomy which are associated with a recurrence rate of 20% over five years; advanced sinus surgery (with image guidance) may avoid further surgery in over 95% of patients over a five year period. Mr Philpott also set up the first Smell and Taste Clinic to be established in the UK and receives referrals from around the country. Approximately 50% of patients seen in the clinic have a cause for their loss of smell or taste that has a treatable cause or may reverse spontaneously allowing for at least partial relief of symptoms with appropriate support and advice.

Personal profile:

Mr Philpott is married with 3 children; his wife is a General Practitioner in Norfolk. His interests include foreign travel, tennis, golf and skiing, the latter having benefitted greatly from a year living in Canada – the Whistler Bowl is a must for any hardened skier! A love of Formula One, European history and developing his culinary skills help occupy some spare time too.
