Dr Eccleshall’s area of specialist interest is the management of all aspects of coronary artery disease and ischaemic heart disease, particularly people with angina or who have suffered a heart attack. His area of expertise lies in revascularisation by angioplasty – the keyhole approach using balloons and stents to treat narrowings and blockages in the blood vessels supplying the heart muscle. His particular interests are the treatment of otherwise difficult to treat branch points (bifurcations), long standing totally blocked vessels (chronic total occlusions) and cases where bypass surgery is felt inappropriate or unacceptable.
Dr Eccleshall’s research interests are closely related to his angioplasty practice. He is very involved in angioplasty without the use of stents where possible such that no foreign object remains in the heart long term where possible.

Dr Eccleshall’s cardiology practice and research are focussed on the major health issue of coronary artery disease. He believes the optimal outcome is best achieved through the use of appropriate medication long term plus relief of the narrowings or blockages by angioplasty or open heart surgery. To that end his training took him to 3 very large cardiac centres in the UK plus he was fortunate enough to have a training fellowship In Amsterdam. His thesis was also in the same field through the University of Birmingham.
Dr Eccleshall was a consultant in a large cardiac surgical centre in Lancashire for 5 years before moving to Norwich in 2009. His move was part of a departmental expansion to deliver 24-hour a day emergency angioplasty to the whole of Norfolk for patients suffering from a heart attack, which successfully improved the results as compared to the use of clot busting injections.
Dr Eccleshall has been fortunate to work in a very dynamic and cohesive department who have been supportive of his clinical and research proposals. The cardiac department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is one of the most experienced centres in the UK in the use of angioplasty with drug delivery without permanent stent implantation and were one of the main contributors to recent important trials in angioplasty including treating difficult branching or dividing blood vessels.
Dr Eccleshall has a very busy home life with twin boys, a daughter (currently all teenagers!) and a golden Labrador. Dr Eccleshall’s wife is a GP in south Norfolk.
He shares the sporting interests of his family including rugby, football, cricket, dog walking but particularly cycling and tennis.
