At The Montefiore Hospital, we have wide experience of performing knee replacement surgery in our high-quality facilities. Some of our consultants offer computer-assisted technology to create a 3D model of your knee joint to assist them during the operation.

We also have three laminar flow operating theatres which regulate air flow to minimise the risk of infection.

Getting here

The Montefiore Hospital is located in Hove. We’re a 15 minute walk or five minute taxi ride from the Brighton and Hove train stations, making arrival by rail easy. You have plenty of public transport options available, including busses, while free on-site parking is available for you and your visitors.

Your consultations

Your initial consultation will take place in one of our eight accessible consultation rooms, so don’t worry if you have difficulty walking. During your consultations, we'll:

• Ask about your medical history
• Say whether you need an X-ray, and/or an MRI or CT scan so your consultant can examine your knee in more detail
• Tell you about the different types of artificial knee joints – also called a prosthesis – as well as surgical methods
• Explain about the different anaesthetic options, and help you choose the best one for you
• Give you a chance to ask any questions you have about your surgery

Once you and your consultant have decided to go ahead with knee surgery, your bespoke recovery plan will be explained.

On the day of your procedure, our ward staff will show you to your room and get you settled in. If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in your room or our lounge area while you have your operation.

Your consultant and surgical team will prepare you for your operation.

Anaesthetic options

When you’ve had time to settle into your private room, your anaesthetist will administer a general anaesthetic, where you’re completely asleep, or an epidural (spinal anaesthetic) where you’ll be numb from the waist down. If you’re having an epidural, you can also have sedatives to help you relax.

During your operation

The operation should take a couple of hours. Your consultant will make the necessary incisions and remove parts of your knee joint, then fit your artificial joint (called a prosthesis) and close your incisions. You’ll start your recovery at The Montefiore Hospital, staying with us for two to three days.

After your knee replacement surgery, you can start recovery in your private room. We have 20 comfortable rooms, all with:

• Armchair
• En-suite
• TV
• Window

Our nurses will ensure you’re comfortable while you recover and can provide pain relief to help manage any of the normal discomforts you might feel after surgery.
