At The Montefiore Hospital, our consultants use many of the latest surgical techniques for hip replacement in Brighton.

During hip replacement surgery, orthopaedic (bone and muscle) consultants replace damaged parts of the hip with an artificial joint (called a prosthesis). The hip replacement procedure can help make your everyday activities more comfortable, reducing pain and improving mobility.

Watch how a hip replacement surgery takes place

Hip replacement: your procedure

You’ll meet your consultant and surgical team who’ll prepare you for your operation. If you've come with a friend or family member, they're welcome to wait in your room or our lounge area while you have your operation.

Anaesthetic options

You’ll probably have a general anaesthetic, so you’ll be completely asleep. However, sometimes it’s preferable or necessary to have a spinal or epidural anaesthetic, where you’re numb from the waist down. If so, your anaesthetist can also give you sedatives to help you relax during the operation.

During your operation

Your consultant will make the necessary incisions and begin to remove worn or damaged areas of your hip joint. They’ll then fit your new hip and close your incisions. The operation should take between an hour and an hour and a half.
