The new £25 million Montefiore Hospital will breathe new life into the former Legal & General building on the corner of Davigdor Road and Montefiore Road. The site has remained empty for six years following the relocation of Legal & General. It was built in 1890 as a furniture storage base for Hanningtons Department Store.
The hospital will be headed up by hospital director Andy Wood, who will also oversee the 15-month construction phase. The currently empty building will be fitted out with cutting-edge medical equipment and an interior that is modern and contemporary – qualities synonymous with Brighton itself.
On completion in late 2012, the Montefiore Hospital will offer patients in and around the Brighton and Hove area some of the most up-to-date clinical care in the country. Designs for the new hospital have been drawn up by Brighton & Hove architects Nightingale Associates. There will be no change to the exterior of the building so disruption to neighbours will be kept to a minimum.
It is part of the Spire Healthcare ethos to use local companies whenever possible and we are committed to supporting the local economy. We chose Brighton based architects Nightingale for the design work and building contractor A.F. Pilbeam in Southwick to strip out the 5,500sq metre office block.
