Joan Thourgood, aged 79 from Castleford, loves bingo, sewing and reading. She didn’t know about her cataracts until she went for an eye test.
Joan Thourgood, 79 from Castleford, had cataract surgery on both her eyes in 2013 under the care of consultant ophthalmologist Mr Dhingra.
She comments: “I’ve worn glasses for years and was only really aware one eye was deteriorating. When I was told that both eyes would need the cataracts replacing I took it in my stride but wanted it done as soon as possible. The optician gave me a choice of local hospitals but I chose Spire Methley Park so I could be seen quickly."
She saw Mr Dhingra, consultant ophthalmologist, for a consultation and he confirmed the diagnosis from the optician and gave her a date for the procedure.
Joan says: “I had the right eye done in January 2013 and the left in June 2013. As a result, my day-to-day life has really improved - I can see clearly and can now thread a needle on first attempt rather than it taking 10. I can also see to read and play bingo a lot easier.”
Her advice to anyone considering the surgery is: "I would advise anyone to just go for it and have them done. The results are fantastic and improve your quality of life."
