Commonly known as ‘lipo’, this is a procedure that reshapes the body by permanently removing fatty deposits.
The results of liposuction can be long lasting if you maintain a healthy bady weight and exercise regularly.
Stubborn deposits of fat that resist all attempts to reduce them can often occur on the stomach, lips, buttocks, thighs, knees and chin. For those who have lost weight through diet and exercise, but still have areas where fat seems impossible to shift, liposuction could be the answer.
The benefits of liposuction
Results can vary from patient to patient, but the benefits reported by patients include enhanced self-confidence and self-esteem and a feeling that their body shape is more in proportion. In turn, this allows people to wear clothes that were unsuitable or uncomfortable before.
What happens during the procedure?
Liposuction is normally performed under general anaesthetic, meaning that you will be asleep throughout the procedure. If only a small amount of fat is to be removed, however, your surgeon may decide to use a local anaesthetic instead. A small incision is made in your skin, and an instrument is inserted with which the surgeon sucks out fat using a vacuum pump. Depending on the amount of fat to be removed, the operation should last between one and two hours.
After your operation
The results of liposuction can be long-lasting if you maintain a healthy body weight and exercise regularly, but you should be aware that gaining more weight may reverse the benefits of your liposuction operation.
