How laser hair removal works
The intense light energy of the laser is selectively absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, known as melanin. This energy heats the pigment, which destroys the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding cells. The laser hand piece is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released, targeting many follicles simultaneously. The laser is then moved to the next area and the process is repeated until the whole area has been treated.
How does the treatment feel?
The treatment has often been described as feeling like the ‘flick of an elastic band’. Most patients describe the discomfort as moderate and tolerable. The best results, however, are achieved with clients who havefair skin and dark hair. Dark hair accepts treatment more readily because it has a high concentration of melanin. Lighter hair, which contains less pigment, responds more slowly to treatment and so more sessions may be required for the treatment to be effective. Because they contain no melanin, grey or white hair is not suitable for treatment.
What to expect after treatment
Although the hair follicles are destroyed by the heat, the hairs will remain in the skin until they are shed between one and three weeks later as the epidermis renews itself. During this period the hairs will seem to ‘grow’ as they are slowly pushed out by the new skin.
Are there any side effects?
Your skin may be red immediately after treatment and the hair follicles may be swollen and bumpy, but this usually subsides within a few hours. Adverse reactions are rare, but may include small blisters or temporary lightening or darkening of the skin.
About your treatments
Only hair that is actively growing is affected by the laser, so a course of treatments will be needed. Treatments are normally carried out every four to eight weeks until a satisfactory result is achieved. The total number needed varies, but typically the optimum results are achieved after six or more treatments. Treatments can take from ten minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the area being treated.
We always begin with a consultation
Prior to your first treatment you’ll attend a consultation so that we can take your medical history to confirm your suitability for treatment and answer any questions you may have. Before treatment commences, a small test patch will be carried out to help ensure your safety and the best possible results.
