At Spire Liverpool Hospital, we have wide experience of performing knee replacement surgery in our high-quality facilities, including three operating theatres with laminar flow. These theatres regulate air flow to reduce the risk of infection.

Some of our consultants also use computer-assisted technology to create a 3D model of your knee joint to assist your surgeon during the operation.

Your consultations

For your appointments, you’ll meet your consultant in one of our 21 consultation rooms. All of our rooms are accessible, making things easier if you find walking difficult prior to knee replacement.

Our dedicated orthopaedic consultants specialise in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal (bone and muscle) conditions. Here’s what will happen before your treatment:

• If you haven’t been diagnosed yet, your consultant may recommend our advanced scanning, imaging and diagnostic technologies to look at your knee and help them understand the cause of your pain or mobility problems
• Once you’ve been diagnosed or if you have a referral, your consultant will then discuss treatment options with you
• Before recommending a knee replacement, they may suggest hydrocortisone joint injections or knee arthroscopy first

Your consultations give you an opportunity to ask questions and discuss your expectations, needs and desires. Your consultant will then be able to outline a treatment and care plan that’s tailored to you.

When you come in for your operation, you’ll be with us for three to four days. You’ll stay in one of our large, bright, private en-suite rooms which has a locked space for your belongings. Each room also has entertainment to keep you occupied as you start your recovery.

Here’s what will happen on the day of your knee replacement operation:

• You’ll meet your surgery team and anaesthetist
• Your anaesthetist will administer the type of anaesthetic that you’ve agreed with your consultant – either a general, where you’re asleep, or a spinal or epidural, where you won’t feel anything below the waist
• Once it’s taken effect, your surgeon will make an incision in your knee, move your kneecap to one side and begin fitting your artificial knee

After your operation, you’ll start your recovery in one of our private rooms. Your room will have:

• Bedside cabinet
• En-suite
• TV
• Window

Our nurses will give you pain relief medication and make sure you have everything you need for a comfortable recovery.
