Mr Alasdair Santini is a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at The Royal Liverpool University and Broadgreen Hospitals, where he specialises in lower limbarthroplasty (hip and knee joint replacement), especially primary and revision knee arthroplasty. He lives in Cheshire and is married with two sons.
He was educated at Gillsland Park Preparatory School and The Edinburgh Academy and then at The University of Sheffield where he gained his primary medical qualification. He is a fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He passed the intercollegiate exam in Orthopaedics and Trauma (FRCS Tr & Orth) in 2002 and gained entry to thespecialist register in orthopaedics in February 2004. His higher training in orthopaedics was on the Liverpool Orthopaedic rotation and involved a year at Wrightington Hospital and a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow sponsored travelling fellowship to visit Dr Leo Whiteside in St Louis, USA.
He is a member of the British Medical Association, British Orthopaedic Association and British Association for Surgery of the Knee. He is also a member of Orthopaedic Infection Control Group for Royal Liverpool University, Broadgreen and Aintree Hospitals. He has been a previous organiser for clinical demonstrations for the visiting Russian Ilizarov professorial team to Liverpool and an examiner for OSCE section of the MCh(Orth) exam at the University of Liverpool.
Mr Santini was instrumental in re-designing the then Core Skills Course in Orthopaedics at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He chairs the organising committee and wrote and edited the accompanying book and DVD. Now under the name Specialist Skills in Orthopaedics, the course is run in five centres across the UK and in 2010 Mr Santini ran the first international course in Dubai.
In 2008, he founded the Grosvenor Orthopaedic Club to promote education and research for hip and knee surgeons in Cheshire and Merseyside. The club meets four times a year and have been joined by a variety of international guest speakers. In addition, he is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, British Association for Surgery of the Knee and Chair of the speciality skills course in Orthopaedics for the Royal College of Surgeons.
