Pioneering pain doctors celebrate 30th anniversary in pain management

Spire Liverpool Hospital would like to congratulate our pain management specialist Dr Chris Wells on the 30th anniversary of The Pain Management Programme originally started at The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust in 1983 by pain consultant Dr Chris Wells and neuropsychologist Dr Eric Ghadiali, within a neuroscience ward on the old Walton Hospital site.

The service, the first of its kind in the UK, helps patients to self-manage severe, chronic pain and has a proud record of improving the lives of thousands of people. Their approach, unheard of at the time, was to encourage people with chronic pain to cut down on their pain medication and to become active again. The programme they devised involved physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychology.

Dr Wells runs his own pain management clinic here at Spire Liverpool Hospital offering a range of pain management treatments including epidural injections, nerve blocks, facet joint injections, trigger point injections and sympathectomy procedure were the nerves are completely destroyed.
