    Background Information
    Professional profile:

Dr Nikolousis graduated from Aristotle University Medical School, Thessalonika, Greece in 1997. Following his graduation with ‘suma cum laude’, he spent 18 months as a GP registrar on the national Greek mandatory medical rotation in a village in Greece, providing GP equivalent medical cover to a population of 2000 people. This was followed by 3 years of General Medical Training in Greece where his interest in Haematology began.

Dr Nikolousis believes that clinical medicine is strongly related to research, therefore was committed to research from his early days in Medicine; and following his General Medical Training, he was successfully granted his PhD title in June 2002. He was trained as a Specialist Registrar in Haematology in the West Midlands region and completed his training at the end of March 2011. Dr Nikolousis was appointed as a Consultant Haematologist at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital on 1st April 2011 and during his Consultant job, he has developed a specialist interest in malignant haematology and stem cell transplantation, publishing his clinical research in peer review journals.

He is also a member of the national working party for AML and the intrathecal chemotherapy lead for Heart of England NHS Trust. Dr Nikolousis always tries to keep himself up to date with the recent advances in haematology and regularly attends National and International conferences where he presents his scientific work too. Currently Dr Nikolousis is an MBA health management student at Keele University and will finish his studies at the end of 2013.

    Personal profile:

He has managed to build excellent relationships with patients, colleagues and staff throughout his career which is reflected in the official feedback he received during his NHS appraisals.

Dr Nikolousis is very approachable and eager to provide the best possible care to his patients. He is very enthusiastic with teaching trainees in Haematology, being the educational supervisor of the haematology SpRs at Heart of England Hospital for the last 2 years. He is very keen on sports with football, basketball and beach volleyball being his main activities outside medicine.
