Spire Little Aston raises awareness for European Obesity Day

May 2010

May 22 sees the launch of the inaugural European Obesity Day. In conjunction with this event, Spire Little Aston Hospital is drawing attention to the problems associated with obesity and how weight loss surgery can help overcome these problems.

Almost 1 in 5 adults are classed as obese. A study into obesity has predicted that if no action is taken, by 2050, 60% of men, 50% of women and 25% of children and teenagers in England will be obese. The research also shows that obese and overweight people will cost the English taxpayer £50bn. As well as the economic cost, the health implications are great and include increased risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and coronary heart disease. Weight loss surgery continues to rise in popularity as an option to combat obesity.

Spire Little Aston hospital has a comprehensive weight loss surgery service which increases the accessibility of surgery to those eligible across the UK.

Spire Little Aston hospital already plays a major role in the local area, having helped many people through weight loss surgery and the service, led by weight loss surgery consultant Mr Khan, helps people from West Midlands and Staffordshire gain access to treatment.

The service offers Gastric Band and Gastric Bypass surgery and each patient receives a detailed consultation to assess eligibility, as well as access to post-operative care from surgeons, highly-trained professional nursing staff and dieticians. Weight loss surgery specialist, Mr Khan, Consultant General Surgeon at Spire Little Aston Hospital said: “Obesity is a major problem in the UK and the Government’s Change4Life campaign is encouraging everyone to get fitter and healthier. However, some people have struggled with their weight for many years and decide that weight loss surgery will help give them the kick-start they require to help them lose a lot of weight. The health benefits to weight loss are considerable, both mentally and physically particularly in relation to reducing type 2 diabetes. Our weight loss surgery service at Little Aston Hospital offers people in the West Midlands and Staffordshire area the chance to explore surgery as an option.”

In May 2009 patient Fiona Faultless received life-changing weight loss surgery, she said “I had gastric bypass surgery 12 months ago under the care of Mr Khan and since then I’ve lost 9 and a half stone. My life has changed completely. I’m much more active than I ever was before. I also have much more confidence and enjoy being able to shop for clothes in regular shops, it’s a sense on achievement which I never thought I could feel. Follow-up appointments with my consultant and dietician helped me to stay healthy and adapt to the changes in lifestyle post-surgery. My experience has been so positive I can’t praise Mr Khan enough.”

Ruth Paulin, Hospital Director for Spire Little Aston hospital said: “Our weight loss surgery offers help to provide more options for people struggling to lose weight. Surgery such as this should not be under taken lightly, but our inclusive pre and post-operative care is designed to help ensure patients get the best possible outcome and support they need.”
