Your consultations

For your appointments, you'll meet your consultant in one of our 21 ground floor consultation rooms, making things easier if you find walking difficult.

Our dedicated orthopaedic consultants specialise in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal (bone and muscle) conditions. Here’s what will happen before your treatment:

  • If you haven’t been diagnosed yet, your consultant may recommend our advanced scanning, imaging and diagnostic technologies to look at your knee and help them understand the cause of your pain or mobility problems
  • Once you’ve been diagnosed or if you have a referral, your consultant will then discuss treatment options with you
  • Before recommending a knee replacement, they may suggest other treatment options like physiotherapy, joint injections, or knee arthroscopy first.

During your consultation you'll have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the treatment your consultant thinks is right for you.

Knee replacement: your procedure

You'll stay in one of our large, private, en-suite rooms which has a locker for your valuables and a TV and radio to keep you occupied as you start your recovery.

Here’s what will happen on the day of your knee replacement operation:

  • You’ll meet your surgeon and anaesthetist
  • Once in the operating department, your anaesthetist will administer the type of anaesthetic that you’ve agreed with your consultant - either a general, where you’re asleep, or a spinal or epidural, where you won’t feel anything below the waist
  • When your anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will perform your knee replacement operation

Visit our knee replacement surgery page for more information about the procedure.
