Breast lump investigation

At Spire Leicester Hospital patients with breast lumps are offered rapid access to a team of breast care specialists. Our team of skilled breast consultants and medical professionals have a wealth of experience in diagnosing and dealing with a wide range of complex breast diseases and conditions with minimal waiting.

What's involved?

Overgrowth of tissue in the breast can cause breast lumps. The vast majority are benign (ie not due to cancer). If a lump is filled with fluid, it is known as a cyst.

Breast clinics use a triple assessment system to diagnose breast lumps. There are three stages:

The surgeon will examine your breasts and armpits, pressing gently on the skin to feel for changes in texture.

Imaging may be needed to investigate inside your breast to see where the lump is. There are a number of types of imaging that could be used; for example; ultrasound or mammography

If a breast abnormality is found during the investigation a biopsy may be carried out to determine whether further treatment is required.
