Background Information
Professional profile:

Qualifying as a doctor in 1986, Mr Newey then trained in Orthopaedic Surgery between 1992 and 1997 in the South West Thames and West Midlands regions. Moving to Adelaide, South Australia for a year, Mr Newey completed a Neuro-Orthopaedic Spinal fellowship before moving to Leicester in 1998.

Mr Newey is a Member of the Faculty of Examiners for the  Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and an Exam Assessor for the MRCS.

Combining work and his keen interest in rugby, Mr Newey is pitchside Doctor for Leicester Tigers RFC.

Personal profile:

Mr Newey was born in Birmingham and went to King Edward VI Grammar School Aston. Having spent too much time playing the guitar and drinking beer he did not achieve the necessary ‘A’- levels to go to medical school.  Mr Newey therefore studied Electronics with Medical Instrumentation at Sussex University where he obtained a 2:1 with which St George's Hospital Medical School in London kindly accepted him.  Martyn Newey has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Leicester since 1998.

Outside of work Mr Newey is actively working to raise awareness of CDKL5 in the UK.  CDKL5 is a genetic condition that mainly affects girls, caused by mutations in the CDKL5 gene which is located on the X-chromosome. Mr Newey has developed a website to help provide information to families who have children with CDKL5 and hopefully encourage and facilitate fund-raising events in support of further research into the condition.
